Visas

Not all temporary visitors to the United States need a Visa. Twenty-seven countries are classified as "Visa Waiver Program Countries." Most visitors from those countries will not require a visa to enter the United States temporarily, although each must present a machine-readable passport that meets certain requirements in order to enter without a visa.

It’s also important to be aware that a visa does not guarantee entry into the country.

Nonimmigrant Visas

Other international travelers visiting the United States temporarily will require a nonimmigrant visa. However, the appropriate type of nonimmigrant visa will depend on the nature of the travel (tourism, business, medical treatment). Different restrictions apply to activities within the United States and the duration of the visit, depending upon the type of visa obtained.

The presumption of the United States government is that everyone who attempts to enter the United States intends to immigrate. In order to obtain a nonimmigrant visa, the traveler must be prepared to demonstrate not only that he has a business, pleasure or medical reason for the trip, but that he plans to remain only for a specific limited time and that he has a home and other ties to a community outside the United States such that he is not likely to attempt to remain in the United States.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Nonimmigrant Visa?

The wait time for nonimmigrant visas varies depending upon the type of visa, the country of origin, and any special clearances that might be required. The U.S. Department of State provides typical wait times, but cautions that they are not guarantees and do not include time required for special clearances.

Visa Procedures

In most cases, the visa application process will include an interview at the embassy or consulate and a fingerprint scan. For some applicants, additional screening may be required. For more detailed information, visit our Visa Procedures page.
