Who Qualifies for an A Visa?
To qualify for an A-1 or A-2 visa, you must be traveling to the United States solely for the purpose of engaging in official business on behalf of your government. If you are traveling to the United States for other reasons not associated with official business on behalf of your government, then you are not eligible for the A-1 or A-2 visa.
Application Process for an A Class Visa
In order to apply for an A class visa, you must have:
- Form DS-156, Nonimmigrant Visa Application, signed and completed.
- An application for Form DS-1648 (Only if you are applying within the United States). If you are applying in the United States, this form should be submitted in lieu of Form DS-156. It is mandatory that this form be completed online.
- A Diplomatic Note: The diplomatic note is a confirmation by your government of your current status.
- Passport: The passport must be valid for travel to the United States for at least 6 months beyond the applicant's intended stay period.
- One Photograph.
- If your immediate family is applying for visa clearance in a separate application, then you must submit a copy of your visa and I-94.
If you are applying for an A-3 visa as an employee of an A-1 or 2 visa holder, in addition to the above items, you must also submit the following:
- A supplemental Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-157, which provides additional information about your travel.
- Employment contract with your signature and the signature of your employer.
Visa Application Fees
If you are eligible for an A class visa, no application fee will be charged.
Can I Bring Family Members into the Country with an A Visa?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried, minor children may enter the United States with you.
Can I Receive a Time Extension to Stay Longer on an A Visa?
Yes. You can extend your stay by a renewal of accreditation by the Department of State. The extension must be requested by your government.
